Cock | Lighting Design

Cock | Lighting Design

What a fun and frustrating challenge this show was – directed by Robert Kramer, starring Michael and Rachel Bouchard, Brian Landis Folkins and Chris Kendall. The script, by Mike Bartlett, describes that the show should have no set, no lights, no sound, no props. What? What?! While that can mean endless possibility, it can also easily cause “deer in the headlights” reaction. Set designer Christopher Waller started off the design team with a fantastic idea to create a cock fighting ring set up in the theater. That risky idea created a unique setting in which I could play with lighting (again, pretty much in the round) against a black and dull metallic background. Robert wanted us designers to have a lot of creative license, so he didn’t push too much with ideas, but did know that he wanted a dark, shadowy design that would cause actors to walk in and out of the light to help drive the scene.
